In 2018, the 20-year-old school became Sweden’s youngest university. In connection to that, Malmö University wanted to develop the brand and the visual identity. Malmö University is a young institution that has had a great impact on the development of the former working-class city of Malmö. The university has stood for new ideas, innovation and closeness to real challenges in the surrounding society. These values are still central to the brand, but for the future university it was also important to convey that it would now be more focused on research, and feel more modern, urban and international. There was also a need for a broader visual toolbox that would better differentiate the university and meet the diversity of needs found in the business.

Solution

The university had few identity elements. The development of the profile gave us an opportunity to create a new strong, dynamic solution that communicates the new university as a committed institution — in the middle of the city, in the middle of society, in the middle of reality. The result is an identity that takes up space with more elements and possibilities for variation. Modern, accessible and vibrant. That can feel young and colorful or impressively academic depending on the context. Always without losing credibility or recognition. A suitable solution for a young university in the middle of a city with a strong character.
